The Scholarship Program, like everything else, has been affected by the Covid-19 global pandemic. All of our students’ lives have changed. The Universities have closed their campuses and all courses are being taught on-line. I have been in communication with all of our students, to check in on how they and their families are doing.
All but three of the students have returned home to Isla Mujeres and are self-quarantined with their families here. Because of the shut-down of all tourism on Isla, there are significantly fewer resources. All students continue to receive their full monthly stipend, even though their commuting expenses no longer exist. They still must pay tuition and have a reliable internet connection - and eat! Thanks to generous donations from many sponsors, most of them are receiving something extra to help them and their families through this time.
We are also using some money from our 'general fund' to supplement help to the students at this time. If any of you are in a position to toss in a little extra, feel free to send it to your team captain or to Jana directly, with very specific instructions on its purpose (a) for the general fund, b) extra for your student or c) your monthly payment for your student).
For anyone who has been 'lurking', thinking of becoming a sponsor, or just want to contribute to our general fund, please contact Jana at - firstname.lastname@example.org This is also her PayPal account. Funds should be sent 'unsecured' or 'friends and family' to insure the full amount is received for the Scholarship Program. Make sure to include a note with specifics for its purpose.
Thanks to all of you, we continue to change lives on this small island, with ripple effects extending far beyond what we imagine. Thank you so much for your support, past, present and future! Life is so good. - Maggie Washa
