Isabel is a young, single mom who has two children, a daughter who is 5 and a son who is 3 with Down Syndrome. Isabel is a real go-getter and came to us through a referral from LOMI (Lean on Me Isla Mujeres). She impressed us with her tenacity and quick responses in initial communication. Isabel lives with her mother, two brothers and extended family and commutes to classes at University del Sur in Cancun. She will also be attending classes on Saturdays. With only one year and 8 months left to finish her associates degree in Law (and a GPA of 8.8 out of 10) Isabel has found herself struggling financially due to a difficult year financially for her family and some extraordinary medical expenses for her son. She had to take a year off to save some money and is ready to return in full force. When she finishes this degree, she plans to continue her education to become a licensed attorney, so she can fulfill her dreams of making a better life for herself and for her young children, and stresses the importance of taking on pro bono cases in her community to help people when she becomes a lawyer. Isabel says, “For me it is important to demonstrate to my mom that these efforts and the efforts of my family bear fruits”.

Stephanie is one of our new students.
Stephanie will be pursuing a 3-year degree in Accounting and will continue selling her beaded jewelry at the Women’s Bead Coop as well as sell desserts that she makes. She will attend classes on Saturdays at University del Sur in Cancun. Stephanie has two children, ages 15 and 10 and now that her boys are older, she says that this is her time to finish her degree, which will enable her to make a better future for her family. We love supporting ‘older’ students and appreciate people who never give up on their dreams to succeed. Stephanie is in need of several more sponsors. New to the Scholarship Program is Alberto who is studying Dentistry at Centro University in Valladolid and has 3 years remaining for his degree. His family lives in Guadalupana on Isla Mujeres. His father is a waiter, his mother is a cashier and he has two younger sisters.
